Rare case of laceration of baby’s face during c-section

C-sections are generally considered to be safe, however, involve a surgical procedure unlike vaginal delivery. Many women with low risk pregnancies often choose to go for natural births. This is to avoid any risks of medications for the baby. In a similar case, a woman had planned to deliver her baby naturally. However, because of stalled labour, she had to undergo an emergency c-section. Moreover, during the c-section a laceration occurred on the baby’s face.

While c-sections are a life-saver in an emergency situation, they do have more risks than vaginal births for the baby. During c-section’s the baby’s cheek is at a risk of accidentally being cut by a doctor’s scalpel. Especially if the face is close to the placenta wall. In this case, Kyanni Williams needed 13 stitches for the deep wound across her left cheek. The unfortunate accident occurred following her birth in Denver, Colarado, to which her grandfather Walter Williams remarked, “to have your granddaughter born to come out to see the plastic surgeon, to get 13 stitches, is devastating, it’s heart-breaking”.

While according to the dad Damarqus Williams, “It’s upsetting, she’s not comfortable.” Whereas the mother, Reazjhana is still in the process of trying to understand what happened during birth. She further stated that she had never heard of anyone having to deal with their baby’s face looking like this after a c-section birth.

Initially the mother was scheduled for a natural birth at Denver Health, however, because of a turn of events, she immediately had to be rushed into surgery.

In surgery the medics performed an emergency c-section and Raezjhana gave birth to her baby girl. The family was left feeling heartbroken after seeing 13 stitches on Kyanni Williams’ face. Doctors told the new parents that the injury occurred because her face was too close to the placenta. Despite the explanation, the baby’s grandmother wants to hold the doctors accountable for the incidence. She said, “I don’t think that’s right. They have to be held accountable for what they did.”

Cuts on babies during c-sections is an extremely rare incidence and a laceration like this is a rarely reported complication. If the baby is in distress and the heart tones are down, doctors have to act fast to make sure the baby lives and opt for c-sections. Denver Health is currently in touch with the family and is focused on providing care in the best interest of the mother and child.
