Doctors found a fruit fly in a 48-year-old woman’s ear

Fruit Fly Larva: Treatment
When the doctors examined the patient’s ear canal they found a fruit fly larva in it. An infection with a fly larva is termed myiasis. Additionally, the skin of the ear canal was eroded. The doctors removed the fruit fly larva from her ear and gave her a topical antibiotic called ofloxacin.

Prognosis
The woman’s earache subsided immediately. Moreover, when the doctors observed her on follow-up two weeks later, the erosion in her ear canal was also resolved.
Insects in the Ear: A Common Occurrence
Insects in the ear are not uncommon. However, it is best to not tell the patients about the foreign agent in their ear to prevent them from getting anxious.
