Moderna – The Second Vaccine Approved for Use in US
FDA has approved the Moderna vaccine for use in people aged 18 years or older, unlike Pfizer that was approved for those aged 16 years and older. A panel comprising of 20 experts made the decision after analyzing data from Moderna’s phase 3 trial. The trial included 30,000 participants and had revealed a vaccine efficacy of 94%. Other than preventing infection with SARS-CoV-2, the vaccine also prevented the development of a severe infection in individuals.

The US government aims to vaccinate approximately 100 million people by April of next year. Moderna vs Pfizer

According to a statement released by Moderna, those with a known history of a severe allergic reaction to any component of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine should avoid receiving the vaccine. The company did not report any serious safety concerns from the clinical trial, however, they did report some common side effects of the vaccine. These include pain at the injection site, erythema, fatigue, and axillary swelling/tenderness.
Although the US has approved the Moderna vaccine, vaccinations will not begin immediately. Currently, the government is waiting on a recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Confirmation is expected by Saturday morning after which vaccinations will likely begin in the country.
