Epidermoid cyst
An epidermoid cyst is a small lump that develops under the skin. The cysts are benign, asymptomatic and typically painless. However, the cysts can become irritated and inflamed. Epidermoid cysts are commonly found on the head, neck, back and genitals. Moreover, the size of the cyst varies from millimetres to inches. It resembles a small bump and the overlying skin is either skin-coloured, whitish or yellowish.
The cysts are filled with cheese-like, white keratin debris. However, the cysts generally don’t require removal unless bothersome.
What causes epidermoid cysts?
Epidermoid cysts are a buildup of trapped keratin. Keratin is a naturally occurring protein in skin cells. The cysts develop when the protein is trapped below the skin because hair follicle or skin disruption. Moreover, the cysts can develop because of trauma or an underlying genetic disorder, for example, Gardner syndrome.
