Case of acute subarachnoid haemorrhage following masturbation

While most people experience positive effects from masturbation, this may not be the case for everyone. Here we report the case of a 51-year-old man who nearly died of a stroke, triggered by masturbation. As reported in the case study penned by doctors in Japan, the right-handed man was habitual of masturbating several times in a day. Literature states that excessive masturbation can trigger physical problems, for example, cramps, irritated or broken skin and swelling of the genitals. Masturbation is also associated with triggering an acute subarachnoid haemorrhage, as in this case.

The 51-year-old developed subarachnoid haemorrhage, a brain aneurysm that causes bleeding in the space around the brain, during masturbation. The patient presented to the hospital with a searing headache that lasted for around a minute, followed by vomiting, soon after orgasming.

According to a doctor who treated the patient, he got lucky. Although the patient’s chances of survival were slim, he was discharged from the hospital after two weeks of admission. As stated by neuropsychologist Dr. Amee Baird, 40% of patients with brain aneurysms die. In addition, 14% of blood aneurysm patients report with ruptured blood vessels near their brain after sexual intercourse or masturbation.

Soon after orgasming, the patient experienced a severe “thunderclap” headache and persistent vomiting.

When he arrived at the hospital, examination showed that he was bradycardic and was experiencing brain fog. The signs are consistent with either a brain or heart related illness, therefore, advised him to undergo a CT scan. Findings of the CT scan were consistent with a subarachnoid haemorrhage in the left hemisphere. Doctors believe that the orgasm led to an increase in his heart rate and blood pressure, leading to an aneurysm and an acute subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Treatment included an aneurysm sac in the brain with surgical coil material to prevent any further bleeding. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged after two weeks.
