AIROS compression pump is one of its kind, an approved device to battle lymphedema.
AIROS is an FDA-cleared Compression Device that provided intermittent, sequential compression to the affected limb. This helps manage the blood flow; hence, the amount of extravascular fluid that could get accumulated otherwise. In other words, AIROS provides intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) therapy for both the upper and lower limbs affected by or prone to lymphedema.
How does AIROS work?
The AIROS provides cycles of compressed air (pneumatic air compression) at certain adjustable pressures, then inflates and deflates the accessory garments to keep the blood flow intact, thereby preventing/managing lymphatic fluid accumulation. Therefore, it is a device to manage the adequate drainage of the fluid. It may be safe to say that it works like the lymphatic system of the body!
Compression therapy is not a new concept. It has been in medicine since the 1960s. However, AIROS is a new concept! Compression therapy not only relieves the swelling but also has a proven role in reducing pain.
Compression therapy benefits both acute and chronic swelling issues. Some of the conditions it helps to manage include lymphedema, venous insufficiency, and arterial insufficiency. Essentially, a compression pump is performing like your own lymphatic system would if it were healthy.
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the accumulation of excess fluid collects in the tissues, consequently causing edema or swelling. There are several causes of lymphedema; 34% are cancer-related, out of which 25% are secondary to breast cancer.
The causes include a tumor blocking the lymphatic system or when lymph nodes have been removed, hence the lymph doesn’t have enough drainage or due to radiation therapy, which can damage the lymph vessels. Other conditions include infections, vascular diseases, genetic mutation, injury, and trauma.
How to manage lymphedema- here AIROS comes into play!
Gerald Makoid, CEO and president of AIROS Medical said:
“We are excited to launch our advanced AIROS 6 device system as it will provide a new treatment option for breast cancer patients battling lymphedema, including those who utilize Medicare. Our research showed that older patients with these types of health complications were underserved. We set out to develop high-end compression therapy technology that was easy for elderly patients to use to drive high compliance and produce better outcomes. We are thrilled to add these products to our line and continue our mission to help lymphedema patients live more comfortably.”
