Experimental Drug GLP-1 Burns Fat and Preserves Muscle Mass

Scientists in Sweden have developed an experimental drug that could offer a new way to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. It improves fat metabolism and lowers blood sugar without causing major muscle loss. The research, conducted by teams at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, suggests the medication may provide an alternative to popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

GLP-1 Medications Side Effects

Current GLP-1 medications mainly work by reducing appetite and slowing digestion, helping people consume fewer calories. While effective, these drugs can also cause side effects, including nausea, stomach discomfort, and loss of muscle mass. Researchers behind the new treatment wanted to create a therapy that targets metabolism directly rather than focusing primarily on appetite suppression.

The experimental medicine is a tablet designed to activate metabolism in skeletal muscles. It belongs to a group of compounds called β2 agonists. However, scientists modified the drug to reduce unwanted effects on the heart, which has been a challenge with older medications in the same category. Moreover, by stimulating muscle tissue, the treatment encourages the body to burn more fat and improve blood sugar regulation.

In animal studies, the drug successfully increased fat burning, improved glucose control, and helped preserve muscle mass. Researchers believe maintaining muscle is extremely important because muscle tissue plays a key role in overall metabolic health and physical function.

The drug has also completed an early phase I clinical trial involving both healthy volunteers and people with type 2 diabetes. According to the researchers, the treatment was generally well tolerated and showed promising safety results. Scientists now plan to move forward with larger Phase II studies to further evaluate how effective and safe the medication may be in a wider group of patients. They also believe the drug could potentially be combined with GLP-1 medications in the future since both treatments work in different ways.
